Aloha!

Hiked the Na Pali Coast today...absolutely amazing.
Took the Kalalau Trail to a secluded beach where the cold river water mixes with the warm Pacific Ocean. Then we hiked up into interior Hanakapiai Valley to see its 300-foot waterfall. I made myself jump into the water under the waterfall and it was quite the religious experience. The long 7 hour hike made us very tired...but very happy.

It's golf tomorrow, the wedding rehearsal, and then the wedding on Sunday. I'll recap later...

Aloha!

Blogger Help : How do I post pictures?

Well I had to try out the new Blogger tool for posting pictures. Not bad. Obviously a lot simpler than the old fashioned way.

Ah the memories of high school basketball. Ain't nothing like putting on your black socks for that oh so special game.

Doves @ The Wiltern

Just got back from seeing a fantastic Doves show at the Wiltern. They have a lot of good songs from their 3 albums and they played most of them. I love the old stuff...I love the new stuff...and the middle stuff I used to love until I listened to it too many times (that's still a compliment right?).

Setlist (As far as 'someone on the messageboard' remembers):
Where We're Calling From
N.Y.
Pounding
Almost Forgot Myself
Sea Song
Words
Sky Stars Falling
Caught by the River
Ambition
Black and White Town
Last Broadcast
Snowden
One of These Days
The Cedar Room
Here It Comes
Satellites
Walk in Fire
There Goes the Fear
Plus they had a great lighting setup and my favorite at concerts: random videos playing in the background. I've officially added "Director of Random Concert Visuals/Videos" to the career list (the dreamy, not so serious career list). Where else can you force people to watch your film about birds sitting on a telephone wire or about 1970's russian youths who wear tank tops and bellbottoms and breakdance like gumby?

Getaway Thursday: chadWAYS

Ah getaway Thursday...ain't nothing like the day you leave for a trip. The excitement was enough to keep me happily singing to my iPod while sitting in pointless traffic (is there any other kind?).

This weekend's festivites are in honor of my high school buddy's departure. In less than a month, young Chad will officially move out of bachelordom and into MarriedLand. Oh how the mighty have fallen. After a flight to SF and a birthday dinner for our buddy Joe, 10 of us will take off tomorrow in a 30' RV. Thankfully, we have liqour-fearing mormon as our lifetime designated driver.

Anyhow, apparently someone enjoyed the movie Sideways a bit too much as our first stop will be in Napa Valley for a bit o' wine tasting. I'm actually pretty excited about seeing Napa. My sister went there and her pic's were beautiful. That and I'm eager to visit the birthplace of Mark "Big Dog" Devany. (You might remember him from such classic reality shows as BLIND DATE). From there its on to Lake Tahoe for some lake fun (boat, bbq, etc.) at our buddy's house. I haven't been to Tahoe since I was a wee toddler so I'm looking forward to seeing it once again. I think overall, hanging out with my buddies in an RV should be a good time. I'll let you know how it goes. Thank god I recently bought a 1GB card for my camera...I'm pretty sure I can take 1024 pictures of the inside of an RV.

Question of the day:
This all makes me wonder...when and where was the FIRST bachelor party? Who started this tradition? Maybe strippers invented it much like Hallmark invented Valentine's day.

Et Tu Simpson's?

From the episode "Home Away from Homer" (5/15/05)

[While leaving a theater bored after viewing a foreign film with Lisa]

BART: I was so bored I cut the ponytail off the guy sitting in front of us. Look at me, I'm a grad student. I'm 30 years old and I made $600 last year.

MARGE: Bart, don't make fun of grad students. They just made a terrible life choice.

:( I mean, I started realizing that for myself about 3 years ago but it hurts when THE show you admire reminds you that your life sucks. I guess I'll be spending my Sundays at 8pm watching Extreme Home Makeover. Ty wouldn never hurt my feelings. (Oh, and FYI, I don't have a pony tail)

Radiohead News

from ateaseweb.com:

Radiohead News: "New album not out before February 2006

Radiohead are working on 15 songs at the moment with two of them described as 'already done and amazing', Green Plastic reports. The band first got together back in January and Thom played a bunch of his new songs for the others. Having never heard the songs before, the rest of the band just jumped in and started adding their own parts.

The whole recording process has been described as 'unorganized' and very different than the way Radiohead has recorded before. The new album should be finished by December with a release date in Februay or March 2006. Touring will possibly begin in February 2006."

Crash

Took the mom to see CRASH today for mother's day...great movie. Deals with a lot of racist issues that everyone faces. Plus, its set in Los Angeles so that's always nice. I highly recommend it to everyone...blacks, caucasians, persians, mexicans, asians, you name it. Happy Mother's day to my caucasian mother!

Damn that Thandie Newton is mighty beautiful...even for a black woman from Zambia. (sense of humor anyone?)

Oh, and mad props to Fun Dave for graduating from Law School today. You're all growns up.

My Gift to Myself: Canon Powershot A510

So I made somewhat of an impulse purchase yesterday...I bought me a brand, spankin' new digital camera. I've been wanting a nice one for a long time now and I found a good one at a good price ($170...thanks Dell!) so I bit the bullet. Besides I deserve it :)

Oooh and I just realized I'm almost 6 days away from my half birthday (Cinco de Mayo)...yet another justification for buying myself a gift. Cuz on your half birthday, who else will buy you a present other than yourself?

I decided on the A510 after checking out Steves-digicams.com ... a great site with extremely thorough reviews of digital cameras. Not only does the site have detailed description of every aspect of the cameras and links to the best prices but it also has a pretty cool quicktime VR tour that lets you rotate each camera so you can see every angle. This of course comes in handy for that friend who only buys a camera because its "cute" and comes in "my favorite color RED!"

UPDATE: Got the camera and I made the right choice. The Canon A510 is a great camera for anyone who wants to mess around with some of the manual settings and pretend they are Ace from the LoveBoat (ooh, my first Ted McGinley reference...nice!) And for $170 you aren't going to find a smaller function with such great features. I get by with the 3.2 megapixels but they have a 5.0 megapixel version (the A520) for a bit more.

A Night w/ The Amazing Race

Last night my Mom was nice enough to take me to see....

Traveling 72,000 miles across six continents in only 29 days, "The
Amazing Race" is a two-time Emmy® winner and one of the most
logistically challenging productions ever mounted. The contestants,
producers and crew utilize hundreds of airline flights, buses, trains
and cars, and employ thousands of people worldwide during each race.

Join us for an evening with some of these amazing people and see just
what it takes to run "The Amazing Race."

Panel scheduled to include:
Bertram van Munster, Executive Producer / Co-Creator
Elise Doganieri, Co-Creator & Supervising Producer
Jonathan Littman, Executive Producer
Lynne Spillman, Casting Director
Phil Keoghan, Host

...plus special appearances by some of your favorite past teams from
"The Amazing Race!"

moderated by Dennis Miller
-----------

My mom and I are both big fans so we had a great time. And yes the picture on the right over there (below my links) is of me at a mock "pitstop/cluebox"...I was the last team to arrive. :(

Other highlights:
If you like the show I recommend watching the archived webcast of the show.

Oh yeah, and then afterward I went to the Chimneysweep and had a beer all by myself because SOMEbody stood me up.

Nokia's N91 Targets iPod

I think I found my next dream phone...the Nokia N91
  • from PCmag.com:
"Without a doubt, the star of the show was the N91 music phone, which has a 4-GB hard drive, Wi-Fi, and Microsoft Media Player 10, making it the first fruit of the Nokia-Microsoft alliance. You can download songs onto the phone via Wi-Fi, USB 2.0, or EDGE cellular networks; the N91 appears on your desktop as a hard drive and also syncs to your desktop Windows Media Player. "

Finally a nice phone with wi-fi. Plus its a Symbian series 60 phone like my current beloved/ugly 3650. I'm a big fan of Symbian because unlike most phones which have a more static operating system, Symbian allows you to install new (more useful) applications to your phone.

Insert YOU ARE A GEEK comments here...

UPDATE: Even more good news...the phone has a 2 Megapixel camera too. Man, I honestly don't think there is anything else I would need. Now I just need to make a crapload of money in the next 6 months so I can justify buying it for the $6-700 it's probably gonna cost.

Quit that Smoking - CD 1

No offense but I think people that smoke are stupid, stupid people. Needless to say, its been frustrating and heartbreaking to know that three of my most favorite people like to partake in my least favorite activity...until now. 2 of those 3 people (the third being Kane "I live off of Diet Coke and Cigaretttes" Moon) are currently attempting to kick the habit much to my pleasure. Being the supportive friend that I am, I've decided to reward and encourage such behavior by making them a CD of new, random music for each week that they stay smoke-free. For their benefit and yours, here is the playlist of week 1's CD:

1. Pepper - Give It Up.mp3
2. Gorrilaz - feel good inc.mp3
3. Doves - One_Of_These_Days.mp3
4. Arcade Fire - neighborhood #2 (laika).mp3
5. Eels - Trouble With Dreams.mp3
6. Handsome Boy Modeling School - breakdown ft jack johnson.mp3
7. Autolux - Turnstile blues.mp3
8. Beck - E-Pro.mp3
9. Bloc Party - Banquet.mp3
10. And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead - The Porpoise Song.mp3
11. Hot Hot Heat - goodnight goodnight.mp3
12. Jack Johnson - Banana Pancakes.mp3
13. The Decemberists - Engine Driver.mp3
14. Kashmir - Rocket brothers.mp3
15. The Wedding Present - Interstate 5.mp3
16. Grand National - Drink To Moving On.mp3

Movie of the Month: Kung Fu Hustle

I was pretty excited when I saw that the Shaolin Soccer people were coming out with a new movie this month. I really thought Shaolin Soccer was great...hilarious characters, great action sequences with Matrix-like special effects and an enjoyable story.

Well I got to see Kung Fu Hustle yesterday and it was fantastic. Like SS, Kung Fu Hustle had even more hilarious characters (such as the 'fairy' tailor/kung fu master above) and exciting and original fight scenes (again with Matrix-like special effects). Even better than SS, Kung Fu Hustle had a very solid plot...above and beyond what you would expect for a kung fu flick. I mean now that I think about it, watching kung fu movies is like watching porn: the viewer expects a laughable plot that is just a vehicle for what the people pay to see...sex or fighting. But in this case (even moreso than SS's better-than-average plot) the audience gets an actual movie plot. You get good guys vs. bad guys, a small love story, some plot twists, some underdogs...and of course ample action and comedy. Good times...good times.

Free_ _ _ _.com

Ah...27 flat inches of The View

Free Flat Screens for Becky

At long, long last...today is the day. Today I received my 27" Sony WEGA TV for FREE courtesy of FreeFlatScreens.com and my 8 dear friends. I'm sure I annoyed plenty of people, but in the name of poverty, it was all worth it. Now I have a very large place to rest my free ipod courtesy of FreeIpod.com and 5 other dear friends.

In a normal-sized apartment, the fact that it's quite heavy and quite large would be considered a good thing. In my half-a-dorm room of an apartment...well, the TV is quite a dominating force. Let's just say I now feel like I live in one of the theaters at the Beverly Center...but with less room. If only I had enough room to entertain my 8 generous referrals.

If anyone (especially my 5 and 8 dear friends) are interested in following through on these deals for themselves, let me know...I have much experience and wisdom to impart. The keys? The $10 Blockbuster trial and the free eFax offer. And oh yeah, make sure your referrals have unique IP addresses.

Jackpot!!

Thank you UNC Tarheels!! Thanks to you and my blindfolded picks I shall be collecting a grad student bonus this year. Gambling winnings make a poor student's life worth living. PLUS, I get to pretend that I know more about college basketball than 88 other people despite the fact that I only watch 3 games all year (all UCLA games). Today's Lesson: Don't turn down entering next year's March Madness pool just cuz you don't have cable, live in a foreign country or cuz you would pick teams based on uniform color...cuz those are the people who win.

NCAA - March Madness - On Demand

NCAA March Madness On Demand

What have I done? I guess I won't be getting much work done on Thursday or Friday...but what else is new? March Madness consumes me just like every other male in the U.S. And this year I get to watch all the games I want online for $20. (Actually its only $10 for me cuz my buddy Tony and I are splitting their 2-for-1 deal) I'm just watching a press conference right now and I'm getting excited. Its crystal clear...no lag...perfect! Can't wait for tomorrow. Gotta love the fact that I'll be here by 9:05am not to get started on experiments, but to catch the tipoff of just about EVERY game.

Sing with me (in the tune of Kip):
I love technology, but not as much as you, you see...
But I STILL love technology... Always and forever.

UPDATE: Having full access to the tourney like that was FANTASTIC! I'm doing this again EVERY year hands down. Kip was right, the world wide web IS great!!

Lebowski Fest 2005

Lebowski Fest West - LA!

Right on Dude, right on! This should be quite an event. Who's in for some ROCKIN' on Friday night at the Knitting Factory followed by some ROLLIN' Saturday at Cal Bowl? Check out the stellar lineup:

Fri, Mar 25th Pre-Party - @ The Knitting Factory
Live music, unique performances, midnight movie
featuring:
-Peter Stormare (Uli the Nihilist / Karl Hungus)
-Jack Kehler (Marty the Landlord)
-SKL - Performing as Autobahn
-Little Lebowski Urban Achievers
and much, much more...

Sat, Mar 26th Main Event - Cal Bowl
Bowling, costume, trivia contests, what-have-you
Appearances by:
-David Huddleston ( The Big Lebowski)
-Jeff "The Dude" Dowd(Real-life inspiration for The Dude)
-Jim Hoosier(The Jesus' Partner, Liam)

Wow...I'm speechless. I don't think I will be in attendance though. I might be tempted to go if they offered some door prizes (like VHS copies of 'Log Jammin' or some Creedence 8-Tracks) and an open bar full of Caucasians and Sasparilla. And of course I would enter the costume party as the "oriental"...just walk around peeing on rugs. Should be quite a weekend. The Dude abides...

New Name (for the moment)

I'm going with 'Apartment 9'. Even though Dave has yet to honor us with his prose, I thought I would honor him by changing the name of the blog from one stupid name to another. And since we used to live in Apt 9...I thought why not. Hopefully he won't get wasted on Strohs 80 (as in 80% alcohol by volume) and vomit in our tree. If only I had a picture of that moment...

Long Live El Camino...I mean...El Nino!

Wow...woke up at 3am last night to the sound of the sky falling on my roof. Thunder, lightning, hail...the whole shabanger. And we're not talking, "my favorite kind of sized ice" hail, I'm talking big chunks off of a glacier type HAIL. Haven't see weather like that in LA since I was a wee lad. According to the doppler map above, I 1) live in Northwest Inglewood and 2) was covered by a big red blotch last night at 2:54am.

Doves: Some Cities (Feb 21- 2005)

I've been listening to the new Doves for the past week and as usual its grown on me. I've always liked the Doves since their first CD so I've tended to have high expectations when their next 2 CD's came out. But after a thorough listening (repeated numerous times on the ipod) I can now give it a solid 'Coldbrains41' recommendation.

Check out scenestars.net for a much more insightful review and an mp3 of one of my favorite tracks, One of These Days. My other favorite tracks are Some Cities, Almost Forgot Myself, Snowden, and Walk in Fire.

AdJab Superbowl Ad Blogging

Live Superbowl Ad Blogging at AdJab

So far (and the game is almost over) my favorite is the simple ad for Bud Light where the skydiving plane pilot jumps out after the six pack of Bud Light. Ah subtle humor. Did you like that one Cathy? Or were they too busy showing Pacifico commercials in Guadalajara?

UPDATE: Damn, I was pulling for the Eagles. But congrats to the Pats...and all New Englanders who LIVE in the New England area and weren't just born there before moving to Los Angeles. On the plus side, the Pats didn't cover the spread so I no longer have to get a tattoo (the result of a pre-game Double-or-Nothing bet with Dave from the 909 - I lost a superbowl tattoo bet years ago when the Raiders lost...just been REALLY slow in getting my tattoo).

By the way, after weeks of contract negotiations with his agent, 909 Dave, aka FUN Dave, will be guest blogging here in the near future.

I'm a LOSER baby...so why don't you kill me...

Saw this yesterday and got really really excited:

“secret” Beck show in LA
from a friend in LA:
Saturday, February 5th

Club 1650 Hollywood, CA
Tickets on sale 6pm at the door,
$10 cash only
Doors open at 8pm. 21+ over

So I get my good friends...we get there early...we get tickets aplenty...we get excited. We walk to Roscoe's...we eat chicken and waffles...we are happy. We walk back to 1650...we stand in line...I realize I lost my ticket...I'm not happy. I search my pockets...I search my wallet...I search my car...I am a jackass. I drive home and bitch on my BLOG while Beck plays his secret show. I wish it was even more secret so I didn't know about it at all.

Atleast I had chicken and waffles.

[UPDATE: Thanks to Pam and Becky I was able to see a few pictures from the show as it was happening as well as listen to about 4-5 songs via Becky's cellphone. Thanks guys! That was the second best thing to NOT losing my ticket. And Becky said there will be another not-so-secret show at 1650 in the near future...with a pre-sale and everything.]

Here's the setlist from Beck.com:

02.05.05 :
Los Angeles, CA :
Club 1650 - 1650 Schrader Blvd Los Angeles, CA 90028
OPENER: Har Mar Superstar

SETLIST:
E-Pro
Black Tambourine
Scarecrow
Guess I'm Doing Fine
Girl
We Dance Alone

Emergency Exit
Broken Drum

We Dance Alone sounded pretty cool as I listened over the phone. Too bad it didn't make it the final cut and end up on Guero.

Band of the Day: Grand National

I've been listening to this CD for the past week and I think its time to share its greatness with y'all. It comes close to reminding me of the Kings of Convenience remix CD Versus which I find immensely better than KoC's original material (well, its atleast less depressing). Like Versus, Grand National has a bass/beat heavy sound that plays below mellow vocals. Actually, listening to their voices right now (on the track North Sound Off) their vocals almost sound like the Police.

Sample their songs in their Audio/Video Section - I recommend Drink to Moving On

So is this an official genre now? Indie Dance Music or something like that? I love South and Franz Ferdinand and bands that are "indie" but definitely make their audience move their feet. The new Ian Brown CD Solarized kind of fits in this category too. I've always liked the UNKLE tracks he does vocals on. I should have been a bass player.

Oops-I-Died.com

So following the untimely death of a friend/coworker (was in his late 40's or early50's and died of a heart attack) I pondered death and the sorrow/emptiness/regret of unexpected losses. We all hear the cliche that we should 'make sure we let people know how we feel about them because we/they may not be around tomorrow'. I totally agree with this but sometimes its hard to do or it can be akward ('Hey Mr. Janitor, I know we never talk but in case I die tomorrow I want you to know that I appreciate you'). So I was thinking, I should start a website where people can store personal messages/goodbyes to a person's friends, families, strangers, etc. and then distributes them upon their death. Yeah you could write a letter and store it away...but who's gonna know where they are when death comes knockin' unexpectedly?

What do you think? Would it work? Too morbid? I was thinking of naming it something like LastGoodbye.com or MessagesFromTheGrave.com...but those are a bit sad or creepy. I think I'll go the humor route and name it Oops-I-Died.com. And on top of that, in order to check on your 'status', we'll send out a monthly email asking, "You still alive?" If we don't get a reply, we'll check the obits and send out your letters. We'll even print them on nice paper...or email...whichever is cheaper.

Plus we could handle their last wills and trusts as on the side...maybe throw in funeral arrangements. Ooh that's a good idea. People can tell us how they want to be taken care of (cremated/buried) and what kind of flowers and music they want at their funeral and stuff. And of course we can DJ the memorial.

[Didnt mean to mix death and humor...but that's how some deal with death right? Anyways Faustino was one of the nicest guys I've had the pleasure of knowing and he definitely made work more fun when he was around. We are all very sad to see him go.]

Fuzzy Wuzzy didn't care...is that how it goes?

Well I'm on like week 3 of my beard growing phase...so far so good. Mostly compliments thus far. I must have had a good night of growth last night cuz this morning started off with 3 people noticing my beard for the first time...even though I saw them about 20 hours earlier.

Next week...FLANNEL!

BBC NEWS | Turning the tables on Nigeria's e-mail conmen

This story is a few months old...but since my dad was recently scammed out of $2000 on eBay I thought I would link to it. Funny revenge story...if only I could get the guy who scammed my dad to join the Holy Church of The Order of The Red Breast.

Easy come, easy go...

Turns out that freeipods.com isn't the only place to get free ipods. You can also get a free ipod by going through my drawer at work and taking mine. Son of a...

And to think that the thieving bastard who took my ipod didn't even have to annoy his friends with referrals.

May my ipod have one of those combusting batteries and may it explode very close to your crotch you bastard.

Merry Xmas!!

[Ralphie is seeing Santa, only he can't remember what he wanted]
Santa Claus: How about a nice football?
Ralphie as Adult: Football? Football? What's a football? With unconscious will my voice squeaked out 'football'.
Santa Claus: Okay, get him out of here.
Ralphie as Adult: A football? Oh no, what was I doing? Wake up, Stupid! Wake up!
Ralphie: [Is shoved down the slide, but he stops himself and climbs back up] No! No! I want an Official Red Ryder Carbine-Action Two-Hundred-Shot Range Model Air Rifle!
Santa Claus: You'll shoot your eye out, kid.

[Mr. Parker reads a side of the box with the prize that he won]
Mr. Parker: Fra-gee-lay. That must be Italian.
Mrs. Parker: Uh, I think that says FRAGILE, dear.
Mr. Parker: Oh, yeah.

[overdressed for winter]
Randy: I can't put my arms down!
Mother: Well... put your arms down when you get to school.

Flick: Are you kidding? Stick my tongue to that stupid pole? That's dumb!
Schwartz: That's 'cause you know it'll stick!
Flick: You're full of it!
Schwartz: Oh yeah?
Flick: Yeah!
Schwartz: Well I double-DOG-dare ya!
Narrator: NOW it was serious. A double-dog-dare. What else was there but a "triple dare ya"? And then, the coup de grace of all dares, the sinister triple-dog-dare.
Schwartz: I TRIPLE-dog-dare ya!
Narrator: Schwartz created a slight breach of etiquette by skipping the triple dare and going right for the throat!

Goggles: I like Santa.
Ralphie: Yeah.
Narrator: Let's face it, most of us are scoffers. But moments before zero hour, it did not pay to take chances.

'Twas the Night Before Christmas (1974) (TV)

I was lucky enough to catch my all-time favorite Xmas classic on ABC Family yesterday afternoon. It just doesn't get better than precocious singing mice who at first don't believe in Santa but then try to believe in him so they can fix the town clock and sing a glorious song to enchant Santa and get him to deliver toys to all the kids in town.

Christmas time is calling...Santa SANTA!!

XXXmas Party Time

So it was Xmas Party time at the Hatos Center once again (and possibly for the last time for me)...that of course means the $15 gift exchange. The talk of the party was my boss and his acceptance of the X-rated gift...this year it was some pasties (the anti-chaffing the nip kind). After his rather extravagent display of the pasties on the OUTside of his shirt, a few of us semi-drunk grad students decided to spread the love of the Xmas party into our neighborhood "quad". The great haters of free speech that we are we decided to censor the naked statue man that for some reason adorns our lovely grassy quad. May his nips be nice and warm for the CA winter. Then we crashed the Neurology Departments Xmas party...we crazy like that!

UPDATE: So far, nobody has dared censored our censorship!

UPDATE II: Still there as of this morning...made it through the first weekend! That's huge! My goal now is to get the statue pasties to stick around through the New Year!!

UPDATE III: Still there as of Xmas Day! Okay, maybe I didn't go to work on Xmas day but neither did anyone who would remove said pasties. So since they were there on Thursday...I'm gonna make the assumption that they are still there. Merry Xmas Mr. Statue! Merry Xmas Pasties!

Tuesday's Hot Weather Girl: Jackie Johnson

Yowsers! Been meaning to blog about this one for awhile. She's WAY hotter than Carl Bell was (who incidently attended Hoover High School according to my 12th grade spanish teacher...Mrs. Something-or-other). Jackie fits in perfectly with my old fav's Jewel, Renee Zellwegger and Joey Lauren Adams. I still don't know why my fav's are blonde's since I'm not known for dating blondes. Odd.

Jackie Johnson joined KCAL 9 and sister station CBS 2 in October 2004. She serves as KCAL 9’s weathercaster on the station’s weeknight 8, 9 and 10 p.m. newscasts. In addition, she is involved in a variety of special projects for both KCAL 9 and CBS 2.Johnson previously was a weathercaster and reporter for WSVN-TV in Miami since September 2001. Prior to that, she worked as a reporter and weekend weather anchor for WCTV-TV in Tallahassee, Florida. A native of Plymouth, Michigan, Johnson attended the University of Southern Alabama, concentrating on meteorology, and then went on to Middle Tennessee State University to get her degree in broadcast journalism. (Jackie's Bio from KCAL)

(By the way, in looking for some pics of Jackie, I discovered I'm not the only blogger out there who loves getting their weather from JJ...some bloggers in Miami are sad to have lost her)

Coming Soon...

I feel so out of my element right now...

Black Friday - After Thanksgiving Sales

Whoa...my mom WAS right...it IS crazy out there. Lame, broke-ass that I am...I woke up crazy early (5:45AM) so I could get a relatively cheap 17" LCD monitor at Staples. That was relatively painless despite the fact that my buddy Erik and I felt like we were lining up to get the first seats for Episode III of Star Wars. I even got a compliment on my "sleek and stylish" monitor from the 60 year old lady in front of me at the register. Geeks of the world UNITE!

Anyways, for kicks we drove over to the Best Buy on Los Feliz...absolute MADNESS. The place was packed beyond belief. I feared for my own safety on 3 seperate occasions. Felt like a cross between the 405 on Thanksgiving Eve and Main Street at Disneyland right after the 9pm Christmas Parade. Thankfully we weren't buying anything so we just left and got some breakfast.

Did anyone get a wake-up call from Target? I wonder if Heidi Klum/Darth Vader/Ice T really call? That would be quite impressive for Target.

“Hey man, this is Ice-T. You wanna mess around or you wanna wake up. Cause I’ll get your butt out of that bed real quick. Cause if your feet don’t hit the floor within two seconds after I call, I’m comin’ over there and I guarantee that you’ll be awake then.”

The Turkey Song

Adam Sandler - Thanksgiving Song

Love to eat turkey
Love to eat turkey
Love to eat turkey
'Cause it's good
Love to eat turkey
Like a good boy should
'Cause it's turkey to eat
So good
Turkey for me
Turkey for you
Let's eat the turkey
in my big brown shoe
Love to eat the turkey
At the table
I once saw a movie
With Betty Grable
Eat that turkey
All night long
Fifty million Elvis fans
Can't be wrong
Turkey turkey doo and
Turkey turkeydap
I eat that turkey Then I take a nap
Thanksgiving is a special night
Jimmy Walker used to say Dynomite
That's right
Turkey with gravy and cranberry
Can't believe the Mets
traded Darryl Strawberry
Turkey for you and
Turkey for me
Can't believe Tyson
Gave that girl V.D.
White meat, dark meat
You just can't lose
I fell off my moped
And I got a bruise
Turkey in the oven
And the buns in the toaster
I'll never take down
My Cheryl Tiegs poster
Wrap the turkey up
In aluminum foil
My brother like to masturbate
With baby oil
Turkey and sweet potato pie
Sammy Davis Jr.
Only had one eye
Turkey for the girls and
Turkey for the boys
My favorite kind of pant
Are corduriys
Gobble gobble goo and
Gobble gobble gickel
I wish turkey
Only cost a nickel
Oh I love turkey on Thanksgiving

Can you spare a dime?

After getting panhandled twice in 1 min at lunch yesterday, I thought to myself, "Do panhandlers ever ask eachother for change?" Each guy asked me if I had change...I didn't so I said 'No'. But if they were to ask eachother...and they pretty much KNOW they have change since they are each shaking a change filled cup...how would that work? Maybe they just make change for one another. Panhandler A gives Panhandler B two quarters in exchange for 4 dimes and 2 nickels.

That reminds me of one of my favorite SNL commercials...

First Citiwide Change Bank I
Customer #1.....Jan Hooks
Bank Representative.....Jim Downey
Customer #2.....Kevin Nealon

[ SUPER: "When you do only one thing, you do it better" ]

Customer #1: I needed to take the bus, but all I had was a five-dollar bill. I stopped by First Citiwide, and they were able to give me four singles and four quarters.

[ SUPER: "At First Citiwide Change Bank, We just make change" ]

Bank Representative: We will work with the customer to give that customer the change that he or she needs. If you come to us with a twenty-dollar bill, we can give you two tens, we can give you four fives - we can give you a ten and two fives. We will work with you.

Customer #2: I went to my First Citiwide branch to change a fifty. I guess I was in kind of a hurry, and I asked for a twenty, a ten, and two fives. Their computers picked up my mistake right away, and I got the correct change.

[ SUPER: "Correct Change" ]

Bank Representative: We have been in this business a long time. With our experience, we're gonna have ideas for change combinations that probably haven't occurred to you. If you have a fifty-dollar bill, we can give you fifty singles. [ SUPER: "We can give you fifty singles" ] We can give you forty-nine singles and ten dimes. We can give you twenty-five twos. Come talk to us. [ SUPER: "We can give you twenty-five twos" ] We are not going to give you change that you don't want. If you come to us with a hundred-dollar bill, we're not going to give you two-thousand nickels... [ SUPER: "We're not going to give you two thousand nickels" ] - unless that meets your particular change needs. We will give you.. the change.. equal to.. the amount of money.. that you want change for!

[ SUPER: "At First Citiwide Change Bank, Our business is making change" ]

Bank Representative: That's what we do.

Whoa...when the hell did this happen?

NBA Action...It's FANtastic!!

Man...I love me the basketball. Just finished my usual Monday night game and I'm feelin' good good good. It's a wonder that something as simple as 2 hours of basketball can help you forget all about your problems, make you feel as fit as a fiddle (sorry, really been dying to use that phrase) and make you feel quite confident about yourself.

Ah to dream of being a professional basketball player. I can't even imagine how perfect that life must be (besides the rape allegations and what not). I mean, I wake up groggy, sit in traffic on the 405, go to work, eat crappy food, and go play for a few hours (NOTE: I love my life, but I have to make it sound crappy for better contrast). Now that may sound like a wonderful life, but Mr. John Q. Basketball gets to wake up in his very large home, have his entourage make him an eggwhite omelet, plays some playstation for like 4 hours, watch Oprah, drive to the Staples Center in his inconspicuous Ferrari, shoot around for an hour, get a message, play basketball for 2 hours, collect his 5-figure DAILY paycheck, and then go home to Brandy or Vanessa Williams or something like that. Must be nice. To be honest though, of all those luxuries, he and I still get to do the most important one...play basketball for a few hours.

Plus I don't even like Vanessa Williams anyways...although a discount from Radioshack would be a plus!

Ugh...

I don't like Las Vegas...

Thursday, November 11, 2004

F.A.G.

No its not a gay club. Nor is it a club where British people smoke cigarettes. F.A.G. is a club/group/way of life that I had the foresight to create AFTER a rather disastrous trip to Las Vegas last year. After losing more than I had planned I of course blamed my friends for not stopping me from going to the ATM...in fact, they aided and abetted the casino in taking my money....therefore, THEY are to blame! But its not their fault...at the time, there was no such club as F.A.G. to motivate them to help me. Help them, help me! So I have since taken it upon myself to found F.A.G., Friends Against Gambling. Now when I want to go to the ATM to withdraw my daily limit at 11:59pm AND 12:01am...my three Fag's Dave, Kane, and Paul will have to stop me...thanks to the vow and club decree and what not. I think they are legally bound to intervene...
Wish me luck!

Quarter-Life Crisis

From one of those many-times forwarded emails...

"Quarter-life Crisis."

They call it the "Quarter-life Crisis." It is when youstop going along with the crowd and start realizingthat there are many things about yourself that youdidn't know and may not like. You start feelinginsecure and wonder where you will be in a year ortwo, but then get scared because you barely knowwhere you are now.

You start realizing that people are selfish and that, maybe, those friends that you thought you were soclose to aren't exactly the greatest people youhave ever met, and the people you have lost touchwith are some of the most important ones. Whatyou don't recognize is that they are realizing thattoo, and aren't really cold, catty, mean orinsincere, but that they are as confused as you.

You look at your job ... and it is not even close towhat you thought you would be doing, or maybeyou are looking for a job! and realizing that you aregoing to have to start at the bottom and thatscares you.

Your opinions have gotten stronger. You see whatothers are doing and find yourself judging morethan usual because suddenly you realize that youhave certain boundaries in your life and areconstantly adding things to your list of what isacceptable and what isn't? One minute, you areinsecure and then the next, secure. You laugh andcry with the greatest force of your life. You feelalone and scared and confused. Suddenly, change is the enemy and you try and cling on tothe past with dear life, but soon realize that thepast is drifting further and further away, and thereis nothing to do but stay where you are or moveforward.

You get your heart broken and wonder howsomeone you loved could do such damage to you.Or you lie in bed and wonder why you can't meetanyone decent enough that you want to get toknow better. Or maybe you love someone but lovesomeone else too and cannot figure out why youare doing this because you know that you aren't abad person.

One night stands and random hook ups start tolook cheap. Getting wasted and acting like anidiot starts to look pathetic.

You go through the same emotions and questionsover and over, and talk with your friends about thesame topics because you cannot seem to make adecision. You worry about loans, money, the futureand making a life for yourself... and while winningthe race would be great, right now you'd just like tobe a contender!

What you may not realize is that everyone readingthis relates to it. We are in our best of times andour worst of times, trying as hard as we can tofigure this whole thing out.
