Concert Week '06: Best Week Ever??
Life advice from an email FW
This excerpt was definitely my favorite considering I was bombarded with this question at Alan's wedding this weekend:HOW TO STOP PEOPLE FROM BUGGING YOU ABOUT GETTING MARRIED
Old aunts used to come up to me at weddings, poking me in the ribs and cackling, telling me, "You're next." They stopped after I started doing the same thing to them at funerals.

The Eraserthis is just a note to say that something has been kicking around in the background that i have not told you about.
its called The Eraser.
nigel produced & arranged it .
i wrote and played it.
the elements have been kicking round now for a few years and needed to be finished & i have been itching to do something like this for ages.

Rolling Stone : Eddie Vedder: Addicted to Rock
Rolling Stone : Eddie Vedder: Addicted to Rock: "In a way, music for me was fucking heroin. It was something I needed. And to see a live show was something I needed, it gave me strength through adolescence and through this young adult life -- to feel like there was a purpose to get through this whole thing. After a live show, the high could wear off in a day or two. The bootleg recordings and listening back at them with your eyes closed and headphones seemed to make a crappy recording actually sound pretty good. It was like getting high again. I was a user."

McSweeney's: Let There Be Lite.
"But in time She began to grow wroth. And when Man asked why She was wroth, She would say he ought to know, which only made Her more wroth.
But at last She gave Man a hint, in the form of a wise parable about some rural gentleman who would not invest in a cow because he was getting his dairy produce pro bono.
Man listened carefully to Her words, and pondered them.
Then Man said, 'Are you saying you're lactose intolerant?'
Boy, was She wroth."

Why Can't I Be as Smart as You?
"My brilliance is a tree that grows in the fertile soil of experience, and extends 74 miles into space, where it catches passing satellites, which not only hang from its beautiful branches like multimillion-dollar Christmas ornaments but also impart to my brilliant tree all of their satellite knowledge. This is how I know the license-plate and Social Security numbers of so many young and attractive celebrities, and it's the only reason, despite court orders that may say different. It's also why you get such great cell-phone reception in my presence."

Officially, It's Officially Official

In the eyes of the University, I'm officially a Doctor!
Phase I: Publicly defend my dissertation - DONE (Jan. 19, 2006)
Phase II: File dissertation with university - DONE (March 9, 2006)
Phase III: Leave Campus/Get a Job - ????
The other interesting thing was seeing all the other dissertations that were being filed. Part of the process is going to the dissertation adviser at the library archives to have her go over the strict details of your dissertation (margins, pagination, etc). The adviser, who has the reputation of being the Dissertation Nazi ("No thesis for you!"), was actually very nice. I can see why she could get all cranky in her little room which was literally filled to the ceiling with vanilla envelopes bursting at the seems with thesis' (Thesi?). Good thing she doesn't have to read them all. But I digress...as I was saying, seeing all these other disseratations was pretty amazing. I mean, here's mine sitting on her desk next to a computer science one on wireless networks in moving vehicles. Or there was the nice girl behind me in line turning in her english thesis on "queer" literature in the 1920's. My point is, isn't it interesting that so many people like myself can waste so much of their lives on such random topics???

THE TREASURE HUNT

ABOUT
I can sum it up in a few words…
I hate driving,
I’d rather be bike riding.
So, last September I organized the LA Scavenger Hunt. It was an overall success but one of the main complaints was that it involved driving. No one likes to drive, especially in Los Angeles where the streets are congested and the price of gas is back breaking. So in turn I have organized the LA Treasure Hunt, which will be taking place on Sunday, March 12th. This will be an all day event similar to the LA Scavenger Hunt but what differs the Treasure Hunt from the Scavenger Hunt is that this will be taking place on bicycle. NO CARS.Here is a run down of how the event will work….
*Everyone that participates is on bicycle.
*Teams will be made up of 4 to 5 people.
*At noon everyone who is a part of the LA Treasure Hunt will meet up at the Echo Park Lake. At the lake there will be a BBQ with free ice cream, food(vegan friendly) and some beverages.
*Around that time each team will sign up. There will be a fee of $6 per person to be a part of the event.
*At 1:00pm each team will be given the first clue along with a xeroxed map of Los Angeles and a pamphlet that has some extra information. Here is an example of how one of the clues will read…..
Clue #2
Collect 25 cans of food. Cannot have meat or diary.
Bring the canned food to this location.
1053 Laguna Ave.
LA, CA (Echo Park)When the team brings the 25 cans of food to that location they will receive the next clue- there they will leave the 25 cans of food with the person who gives them the next clue. There will also be water and oranges at each stop for everyone involved. To solve each clue the people participating will have to ride all over Echo Park, Silverlake, Downtown LA, Los Feliz, and Koreatown and each clue gets harder and harder- it won’t be easy, honestly, I can not put half of the stuff that will be a part of the clues on this website. Anyway, many of the clues will have canned food, children’s clothes & shoes, and toiletries mixed into them. All of these items will be donated to the *Union Rescue Mission the next day. Like this event the LA Scavenger Hunt was a benefit for the Union Rescue Mission. Over $10,000 in material goods were raised in the scavenger hunt and with this event I am trying to top that.
The treasure hunt is made up 10 clues. The team to solve the ten clues the fastest will be given the grand prize, which is well over $2,500 in swag from dozens of record labels, clothing lines and gift certificates to different restaurants and stores in Los Angeles- the list of sponsors will be announced next week. At 7:00pm the treasure hunt will end and right afterwards an after party will be taking place at the Echo, where a number of bands will be playing(The Joggers, We Are Wolves, plus a few special guest), peeps will be spinning records and everyone that participates in the event will get in for free. The purpose of this event is to bring friends together and have a goodtime. It’s all about the goodtimes. Please go to the “more info” section to find how to sign up and what you need to be a part of this.
Hope all is well,
Sean Carlson

Memorable Quotes from Groundhog Day (1993)
"When Chekhov saw the long winter, he saw a winter bleak and dark and bereft of hope. Yet we know that winter is just another step in the cycle of life. But standing here among the people of Punxsutawney and basking in the warmth of their hearths and hearts, I couldn't imagine a better fate than a long and lustrous winter. "

Went to this site expecting it to find legitimate "Double Features" playing in my neighborhood...turns out it tells you the timing of movies so that if you happen to get out of Harry Potter at 8:05 pm, you could just happen to stroll into the 8:10 pm showing of Brokeback Mountain if you just happen to get lost at the multiplex. Of course they offer the disclaimer, "Never SNEAK into movies!"

I just finished watching Season 1 of Entourage on DVD last night and really like it...especially Turtle. When I first read this article, I thought the actor who plays him died. Fortunately(?), it was just the Turtle that his character is based on (sorry buddy). The whole show is based on Marky Mark Wahlberg and his buddies as he rose to fame.

12 MP3's of Xmas: #3 - "You mean you forgot cranberries too?!?"
by The Waitresses
Bah, humbug!" No, that's too strong
'Cause it is my favorite holiday
But all this year's been a busy blur
Don't think I have the energy
To add to my already mad rush
Just 'cause it 'tis the season.
The perfect gift for me would be
Completions and connections left from
Last year, ski shop,
Encounter, most interesting.
Had his number but never the time
Most of '81 passed along those lines.
So deck those halls, trim those trees
Raise up cups of Christmas cheer,
I just need to catch my breath,
Christmas by myself this year.
Calendar picture, frozen landscape,
Chilled this room for twenty-four days,
Evergreens, sparkling snow
Get this winter over with!
Flashback to springtime, saw him again,
Would've been good to go for lunch,
Couldn't agree when we were both free,
We tried, we said we'd keep in touch.
Didn't, of course, 'til summertime,
Out to the beach to his boat could I join him?
No, this time it was me,
Sunburn in the third degree.
Now the calendar's just one page
And, of course, I am excited
Tonight's the night, I've set my mind
Not to do too much about it.
Merry Christmas! Merry Christmas!
But I think I'll miss this one this year.
[4x]
Party dashing through the snow
Of course I bundled up too tight
Last minute have-to-do's
A few cards a few calls
'Cause it's R-S-V-P
No thanks, no party lights
It's Christmas Eve, guttery laugh
Turned down all of my advice.
Last fall I had a night to myself,
Same guy called, halloween party,
Waited all night for him to show,
This time his car wouldn't go,
Forget it, it's cold, it's getting late,
Trudge on home to celebrate
In a quiet way, unwind
Doing Christmas right this time.
A&P has provided me
With the world's smallest turkey
Already in the oven, nice and hot
Oh damn! Guess what I forgot?
So on with the boots, back out in the snow
To the only all-night grocery,
When what to my wondering eyes should appear
In the line is that guy I've been chasing all year!
"I'm spending this one alone," he said.
"Need a break; this year's been crazy."
I said, "Me too, but why are you?
You mean you forgot cranberries too?"
Then suddenly we laughed and laughed
Caught on to what was happening
That Christmas magic's brought this tale
To a very happy ending! "
Merry Christmas! Merry Christmas!
Couldn't miss this one this year!

12 MP3's of Xmas: #2 - Christmas in Hollis
[Run]
It was December 24th on Hollis Ave in the dark
When I see a man chilling with his dog in the park
I approached very slowly with my heart full of fear
Looked at his dog, oh my God, an ill reindeer
But then I was illin because the man had a beard
And a bag full of goodies, 12 o'clock had neared
So I turned my head a second and the man had gone
But he left and dropped his wallet smack dead on the lawn
I picket the wallet up then I took a pause
Took out the license and it cold said "Santa Claus"
A million dollars in it, cold hundreds of G's
Enough to buy a boat and matching car with ease
But I'd never steal from Santa, cause that ain't right
So I'm going home to mail it back to him that night
But when I got home I bugged, cause under the tree
Was a letter from Santa and all the dough was for me
[D.M.C.]
It's Christmas time in Hollis Queens
Mom's cooking chicken and collard greens
Rice and stuffing, macaroni and cheese
And Santa put gifts under Christmas trees
Decorate the house with lights at night
Snow's on the ground, snow white so bright
In the fireplace is the yule log
Beneath the mistle toe as we drink egg nog
The rhymes you hear are the rhymes of Darryl's
But each and every year we bust Chrsitmas carrols
(Christmas melodies)
[Run-D.M.C.]
Rhymes so loud and prod you hear it
It's Christmas time and we got the spirit
Jack Frost chillin, the hawk is out
And that's what Christmas is all about
The time is now, the place is here
And the whole wide world is filled with cheer
[D.M.C.]
My name's D.M.C. with the mic in my hand
And I'm chilling and coolin just like a snowman
So open your eyes, lend us an ear
We want to say Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

12 MP3's of Xmas: #1 - Steve Martin's 5 Wishes for Christmas
If I had two wishes I could make this holiday season, the first would be for all the children of the world to join hands and sing in the spirit of harmony and peace. And the second would be for 30 million dollars a month to be given to me, tax-free in a Swiss bank account.
You know, if I had three wishes I could make this holiday season, the first, of course, would be for all the children of the world to get together and sing, the second would be for the 30 million dollars every month to me, and the third would be for encompassing power over every living being in the entire universe.
And if I had four wishes that I could make this holiday season, the first would be the crap about the kids definitely, the second would be for the 30 million, the third would be for all the power, and the fourth would be to set aside one month each year to have an extended 31-day orgasm, to be brought out slowly by Rosanna Arquette and that model Paulina-somebody, I can't think of her name. Of course my lovely wife can come too and she's behind me one hundred percent here, I guarantee it. Wait a minute, maybe the sex thing should be the first wish, so if I made that the first wish, because it could all go boom tomorrow, then what do you got, y'know? No, no, the kids, the kids singing would be great, that would be nice. But wait a minute, who am I kidding? They're not going to be able to get all those kids together. I mean, the logistics of the thing is impossible, more trouble than it's worth! So -- we reorganize!
Here we go. First, the sex thing. We go with that. Second, the money. No, we got with the power second, then the money. And then the kids. Oh wait, oh jeez, I forgot about revenge against my enemies! Okay, I need revenge against all my enemies, they should die like pigs in hell! That would be my fourth wish. And, of course, my fifth wish would be for all the children of the world to join hands and sing together in the spirit of harmony and peace.
Thank you everybody and Merry Christmas.
