A couple years back I bought a few shares of Infinity Broadcasting (who owned a number of radio stations across the country). Following some mergers and acquisitions my stock turned into shares of Viacom, the parent company of Mtv, VH1, and a crapload of other channels. So for years now, when I take a look at my Yahoo Financial portfolio page, I've had the joy of having Viacoms "financial" news include random news about TV shows or celebrities ...just cuz they include some Viacom station. This morning I was struck by just how weird and funny this is as I went from reading a NORMAL business-minded headline for one of my tech stocks:

Had my first NBA fantasy league draft of the season yesterday. I think Draft day is the new Xmas...I even woke up bright and early at 8 am...on a SUNDAY...ready to "unwrap my gifts." Geek News: Halo - The Movie

Rings and halos: The Oscar-winning creative team behind the The Lord of the Rings films, including director Peter Jackson, has been named to run the production of the upcoming film based on Microsoft's blockbuster Halo video game.

Jackson and his wife, Fran Walsh, will serve as the executive producers for Halo, which is targeted for worldwide release in mid-2007 by Universal Pictures and Twentieth Century Fox film studios.

Universal will oversee the film's production and domestic distribution. Fox will handle international distribution.

The Halo movie will be shot in Wellington, New Zealand, and wi ll use Jackson's production and post-production facilities there.

Screenwriter and novelist Alex Garland wrote the original feature film adaptation of Halo. A director will be named in coming weeks, and the cast has yet to be announced.

MusiCares Hurricane Relief

Since I'm a big fan of the Big Easy, I've been wanting to make a donation to charity to help out the area for sometime. Well I finally did it today and I was happy to find a charity that will specifically help the part of New Orleans that affected me the most...the city's musicians. Apparently MusiCares is a charity that focuses on helping musicians...in this case they are helping "music people impacted by Hurricane Katrina. Assistance includes basic living expenses such as shelter, food, utilities, transportation; medical expenses; clothing; instrument and recording equipment replacement; relocation costs; school supplies for students; insurance payments and more."

• A.) Desmond sleeps on a bunk - the top one to be exact. Both bunks have a collection of personal items at the back base; the bottom bunk under Desmond looks as if it was freshly used, it's not made, it's rather messy, and there's a collection of books/items distinct from those Desmond has.
• B.) After using the computer and turning on the music, Desmond cleans up from the table the half-finished breakfast of either himself from the day before, or someone else. He cleans up a glass of what looks like orange juice, a bowl of cereal, and some other food on a plate. He then goes on to make his own meal.

This show ROCKS! Pretty damn enthralling. Reminds me of the days of watching Twin Peaks with my sister and trying to figure out all the random hints. In that case, the hints barely meant anything (other than DAVID LYNCH IS CRAZY). I think the creators of Lost have this all perfectly plotted out though. At least I hope they do.

Good article from the LA Times about the New Orleans and its love-hate relationship with its many coasts (gulf, river, lake). I've been to New Orleans twice in the last 4-5 years and I really loved the city. The people and the food were wonderful and the architecture of the buildings in the french quarter and of the houses/mansions in the nearby suburbs was amazingly beautiful. Reminds me how ugly LA is. Guess that's the price we pay for being a "modern" city. Since when is 70's architecture "modern"? Anyways, I hope that N'awlins is able to fully recover for the sake of its friendly citizens and so that other people can see it in its full southern glory.

Looks like Google is getting in on the Instant Messaging fun. I just tried it out and its not bad. Very simple and a very light program (only 900K). It has voice chat too which my buddy in Germany said sounded pretty good (I couldn't hear him cuz he didn't have a microphone). I'm a pretty big fan of Google so why not.

It's all in the family for The Amazing Race.

CBS has revealed the lineup of contestants for The Amazing Race: Family Edition, the latest incarnation of the two-time Emmy winning reality competition. This year, 10 four-member clans will trek around the world in a battle for $1 million. In the past, friends, lovers, spouses and/or coworkers have paired up, for better or worse, on two-person teams.

As they race around the globe, the four-person family teams will be pitted against each other in a series of mental and physical challenges, presumably testing the bonds of sibling-hood, parent-hood, couple-hood, in-law-hood step-family-hood.

"Anytime you put a family of four together, you get interesting dynamics. It's a pretty humorous and explosive mix," executive producer Bertram van Munster tells USA Today.

Also new this year is the addition of younger competitors. This change meant some adjustments to the grueling Amazing Race schedule. First, there are fewer non-elimination episodes, and the teams only traveled about 30,000 miles total, less than half the 72,000 miles logged by contestants in season six. Less crowded competition sites were also chosen in deference to the kids.

Still, producers see the addition of children as a possible plus for the teams.

"Kids have major advantages just by size," says van Munster. "They can climb through something with more agility, and they're very fast in a crowd."

Plus, they're also, well, childish, so amusing playground antics are likely to ensue. Nine-year-old Carissa Gaghan from Glastonbury, Connecticut, threw down the gauntlet to on Tuesday's The Early Show, which introduced the competitors. "Either you'll be a zero or you'll be a hero," she told her fellow racers.

The family gimmick hopes to build on the show's record ratings last season. Fueled by the antics of Survivor couple Rob Mariano and Amber Brkich, the seventh installment of The Amazing Race averaged 12.5 million viewers a week. The show could also win its third straight Emmy in the Reality Competition category at next month's awards.

So this is what I came up with tonight...not great but it will do. A simple shirt for my favorite, simple song "I Will" which has the lyrics 'white elephants, sitting ducks"...hence my choice of design. I think I read somewhere that the lyric may reference a line from a Hemingway short story about Spanish mountains looking like white elephants sitting down. Hmm...sitting down or sitting ducks, I don't know.

Aloha!

Hiked the Na Pali Coast today...absolutely amazing. Took the Kalalau Trail to a secluded beach where the cold river water mixes with the warm Pacific Ocean. Then we hiked up into interior Hanakapiai Valley to see its 300-foot waterfall. I made myself jump into the water under the waterfall and it was quite the religious experience. The long 7 hour hike made us very tired...but very happy.

It's golf tomorrow, the wedding rehearsal, and then the wedding on Sunday. I'll recap later...
