Bloc Party - LA BLOGOTHEQUE

Bloc Party - Bloc Party - LA BLOGOTHEQUE: "It was an October evening. We were insistent, helped by some fans and people passing by. In the end it was worth the trouble : Bloc Party accepted to play one of their best songs, all acoustic."

The Dears

The Dears at Hiro Ballroom - photo by Gabi Porter
brooklynvegan: The Dears @ Hiro Ballroom (CMJ), NYC: "The best way to describe The Dears is epic and complicated, and if anyone were to force me to name my favorite band ever, of the 5 or 6 contenders The Dears always seem to float to the top. Murray Lightburn plays the tortured town crier of the apocalypse really well, and despite the melancholy and doom, it's a trip you want to take with him because the music is just so damn good."
I've always like The Dears work but have never really given them a full and complete listen. Hopefully that will change after I get into this new album (Missles) as I'm always am happy when their songs pop up in my shuffle rotation. The voice of Murry Lightburn (lead singer) used to remind me of Morrisey for some reason...now I think more Lightspeed Champion.

Locally they'll be playing on all Hallows Eve Eve...Thurs. Oct. 30 at Key Club (ugh) opening for Secret Machines.

Go Canada!

David Fincher’s Nike Fate Commercial

David Fincher’s Nike Fate Commercial: "“Fate” tells the life-long journey of pro football players LaDainian Tomlinson and Troy Polamalu as their destinies collide in an NFL football game."
Definitely the recipe for one of my favorite commercials...directed by my favorite director, scored with one of my favorite composer/soundtracks (Ennio Morricone) and starring 2 of my favorite NFL players. Its up there with another great Nike commercial from a year or two ago:

MINI E

MINIUSA.COM / minie-m

According to BMW, the Mini E will be powered by a 150 kW (204 horse power) electric motor fed by a high-performance rechargeable lithium-ion battery. Also, the Mini E’s drive will be transferred to its front wheels via a single-stage helical gearbox, making the car almost completely silent and entirely free of emissions.

In terms of single-charge distance coverage, BMW claims the Mini E’s battery technology will give the car a maximum operational range in excess of 240 kilometres, which is the equivalent of around 150 miles.

Interestingly, rather than rolling out the Mini E for general consumption, BMW has said that it will initially launch a fleet of 500 vehicles through a pilot project involving select private and corporate customers in California, New York and New Jersey. The company is also considering a similar introduction in Europe.

sigur rós @ Copley Hall in San Diego

Sigur Ros...now armed with confetti canons

Yet another amazing show from our Icelandic friends Sigur Rós. I always enjoy seeing them in more classical venues where their sound can really envelope you from every angle and Copley Hall in Downtown San Diego came through. If you are a fan, and have never seen SR live...you aren't a fan really are you? If you don't know SR very well, go to see them live and your world will change. They really put on an epic, moving, transcendent show. I may have to go out on a limb and say I would see Sigur Rós over Radiohead...I know, bite my tongue. Its true though...atleast for this past tour...SR gave me goosebumps, and RH did not. [BTW, happy belated 40th Thom!] Please enjoy my (reverb-filled) video montage from the show...

And don't forget my MUCH better video from their Heima Q&A performance last year at the New Yorker Festival.

Ra Ra Riot @ the Echo

Ah what a great show! I think Ra Ra Riot is my pick for new band of the year...well my 2008 at least. Thanks again to Tony for the great SINGLE CAM video of one of my favorite songs, Can You Tell.
